Day by Day Details Itinerary

Day 0: Delhi - Leh flight
Early morning transfer to the domestic airport to catch the flight to Leh. This surely is one of the most sensational scheduled flights in the world, taking you right over the top of the Greater Himalaya before dropping down in a series of steep turns, to land at the small airport at Leh. Flight time approx. 1½ hours. You will be met on arrival and driven through Leh to check into the Hotel. Leh is at an altitude of 11,500ft/3,500m and therefore we recommend that the rest of the day be spent resting to help adjust to the altitude.
Overnight: Hotel

Day 03: Sightseeing Leh
visit the monasteries at Shey and Thiksey. Shey gompa is situated on a small hill 10 miles south of Leh and was once the residence of the royal family. It was constructed by the first king of Ladakh, Lhachen Palgyigon, and was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kings. Thiksey gompa is located 15 miles from Leh. It is a very imposing monastery and one of the finest example of Ladakhi architecture of any type. The 12 storey building contains numerous stupas, statues, thankas and wall paintings as well as a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings. The main prayer hall has a 50 feet high seated Buddha figure.

Day 04: Drive to the Khardung La
As part of our acclimatisation process we take a jeep drive up to the Khardung La, a spectacular pass which at 5300 metres is probably the highest motorable road in the world. This remote road leads to the Nubra valley and the mountains to the north of Leh, and until recently it was closed to foreign travellers. The panoramic views from the pass extend right into the Zanskar Range beyond the Indus River. We can spend time at the pass, gasping in the rarefied atmosphere, before returning to our hotel in Leh.

Day 15: Acclimatization day at base camp
From base camp, we climb straight up the moraine, which stands immediately above our camp. This is tiring work first thing in the day but it soon eases to give a gentle descent and access to the glacier beyond. Depending on snow conditions we may put on crampons as soon as we walk onto the glacier. The surface of the glacier will probably be uneven and furrowed by melt water streams. There are a few, very small crevasses, which are crossed easily. At the top of the glacier the slope steepens as we climb up onto the south face where the camp is located on a promontory of rough ground at approximately 5,300m/17,400ft. Using this high camp also engenders a real 'expedition feel' and heightens the anticipation of the climb itself.
Overnight Tent

Day 16: Summit day
Our route initially crosses scree and boulder slopes, and then leads to easy angled snow slopes, which require ice axe and crampons. The route is not difficult but at this altitude, it will be strenuous. From the summit of Stok Kangri (6116m), we should see as far as the Karakoram, the Pamirs and Tibet. If it's warm enough we'll rest and recover some energy on top before descending to base-camp.
Overnight Tent

Day 17: Stok Kangri Base Camp - Leh (5 h walk to Stok)
All downhill and through wild gorge scenery. There should be time to visit Stok Palace and museum while we wait for our jeeps. Then an hour's drive across the Indus valley to the comforts of the guesthouse in Leh.
