Do you like to live life in the fast lane? Or, are you inclined to feel your adrenaline rush more often than not? No matter what your excuse is, a motorbike expedition in Ladakh is sure to get you there and back! Ladakh motorbiking tours are a thrilling way to experience the highest mountain range in the world. Visiting Ladakh by bike happens to be the preferred mode of discovering Himalayas for the young (at heart). Riding up on those narrow roads, you can view Ladakh at your own pace, stopping your motorbike to have a dekko at the many attractive Buddisht Gompas, mingling with the locals at small but very beautiful villages, relishing their cuisines, and all this while enjoying a long, unbroken view of the snow-clad Himalayan mountain ranges. Motorbike expeditions have found many takers throughout India. They are a great way to encounter a distinct, personalized trip through quaint towns and scenic countryside, witness local culture, history and nature, apart from the tall peaks. Those who do undertake motorbiking in Ladakh are hooked onto it and are likely to return to it. Once in a lifetime just doesn’t seem enough for adrenaline junkies, lovers of magnificent natural landscapes, and fans of tradition and heritage. The best time for a motorbike expedition to Ladakh is from mid-June to September-end. One can ride through the 470+ km from Manali to Leh. The route is not for the faint hearted – they are more often zig-zag than straight, and have a steep incline at many places.
Apart from the world famous Manali-Leh trip, for shorter spells of the action, one can even hire motor bikes from Leh city and drive to the nearby places or go on longer excursions. Such trips can be anything from a few hours long to a few days long. Some popular routes are: to Pangong lake (about 160 km; requires passing through Chang-la pass which is at a height of 5360 mt or 17580 ft); to the beautiful Nubra valley (130 km; you will have to cross the Khardungla pass which is at 4837 mt or 18380 ft); or simply to the beautiful monasteries around Leh (Hemis, Lamayuru, Stok, among others).
Travelling in groups is recommended for safety reasons (the roads can be treacherous, especially as the heat melts the winter snows, and as the water flows down the slopes, roads may get damaged at certain places.) Those with experience can go on their own, although it is strongly recommended that one goes with a tour guide as riding a motor bike on mountain roads can be tricky. Valid driving licence is necessary. You will also need helmets, suitable protective clothing, maps, water, food and some medicines are also needed. Other items will depend on the duration and route of the trip.
Now, if you are all set, what are you waiting for? Just vroom off.
